Philosophy Of Art Education

Art is a universal form of communication. It gives vivid insight into how we think and view the world. Art is a visual articulation of the human experience, as well as a detailed record of history and the human perception. Children have innate ability to tell their stories through this medium, in a way that even some adult artists cannot. 

 

The purpose of Art Education then, should be to focus on further developing a child’s ability to express ideas and communicate through this medium. By having this overlaying goal, a teacher will create an art lesson that is child-oriented and relevant to their current perceptions while also fostering a place for intellectual development.  Furthermore, Art Education should encourage a child to learn and explore. This exploration will develop a child’s self-worth and further their desire to explore the world.

 

As an Educator and an Artist, I firmly believe that art should not simply be about the fabrication of a piece of aesthetic beauty. Art gives people the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of interdisciplinary principles. My goal as an Educator is to create students who are aware of the profound connection between the art they are creating and the world around them. By exploring the contributions of other disciplines, students will develop greater cognitive processes and a desire to explore the world. Thus, my students will learn that art should be created and studied for its power of expression as well as its universal ability to correlate to other areas of social importance. 

 

While some do not see art as an essential part of the school day, it is a language of thought that should be accessible to all students. As art educators it is essential to demonstrate arts importance and how it interrelate to all areas of life. This can be achieved through Interdisciplinary Art Education. It allows teachers to help students develop a deeper understanding of the world through a universal language accessible to everyone. Through continuous and unique exposure to math, science, literature, and history, students will learn to develop connection and investigate the world around them. With Interdisciplinary Art Education, students are given the tools to understand a cohesive body of thought.

 

 Most importantly, students should know that every day is an opportunity for learning and creation. I wish to instill passion for the arts in my students. And introduce them to a self-perpetuating cycle of exploration, creation, and profound understanding.
